Luxury Furniture FAQ

Buying luxury furniture is different from buying standard retail furniture. Many pieces are made to order, imported, customized, or installed through a managed delivery process. This FAQ explains the most common questions Luzione receives about lead times, delivery, customization, materials, COM/COL, outdoor furniture, and trade support.

What makes furniture “luxury”?

Luxury furniture is defined by a combination of design, proportion, material quality, craftsmanship, finish detail, comfort, sourcing, and service. It is not only about price.

A luxury piece should feel intentional from every angle. The silhouette should be resolved. The materials should suit the room and the client’s lifestyle. The construction should support long-term use. The finish should look refined in real light, not just in a product photo.

At Luzione, luxury furniture is also about the complete experience: specification, procurement, delivery planning, white-glove installation, and how the final home feels once everything is placed.

How long are luxury furniture lead times?

Luxury furniture lead times usually range from a few weeks to several months. In-stock pieces may arrive faster, while custom, imported, upholstered, stone, oversized, or made-to-order pieces can take much longer.

For whole-home projects, Luzione recommends planning early. A complete furniture delivery timeline may include design approvals, production, export packing, shipping, customs, receiving, inspection, local delivery, and installation. The quoted production time is not always the same as the final install date.

The safest rule: order the longest-lead anchor pieces first. Sofas, sectionals, dining tables, beds, rugs, outdoor furniture, and custom upholstery should not be left until the end of a project.

Why does luxury furniture take longer than standard furniture?

Luxury furniture often takes longer because many pieces are not mass-produced and sitting in a warehouse. They may be made to order, finished by hand, upholstered after fabric selection, or produced by specialized workshops.

Lead time can also include freight coordination, customs, receiving, damage inspection, and white-glove delivery scheduling. For imported furniture, the process is more complex than a domestic parcel shipment.

Longer lead times are not always a weakness. They often reflect a more specific product. The key is to plan early and track every item properly.

What is white-glove furniture delivery?

White-glove furniture delivery is a higher-service delivery method where trained teams bring furniture into the home, place it in the correct room, unpack it, assemble it when required, remove packaging, and handle the piece with greater care than standard curbside delivery.

For luxury furniture, white-glove delivery is important because many pieces are heavy, oversized, fragile, or difficult to replace. Stone tables, lacquer casegoods, large sofas, dining tables, beds, mirrors, and imported pieces should not be treated like ordinary packages.

Luzione recommends white-glove delivery for most luxury furniture installs, especially whole-home projects.

What is included in a whole-home furniture install?

A whole-home furniture install usually includes delivery coordination, room-by-room placement, assembly, rug placement, bed setup, furniture leveling, accessory placement, packaging removal, and a final punch list.

The best installs are planned before the truck arrives. The team should know which pieces go in each room, which items must be placed first, whether elevators or loading docks are reserved, and whether the site is ready.

A whole-home install is not just “delivery.” It is the final step of procurement and design execution.

Can luxury furniture be customized?

Yes. Many luxury furniture pieces can be customized by size, finish, fabric, leather, configuration, or material. Customization depends on the manufacturer, product, timeline, and technical limits of the piece.

Common customization options include:

  • Upholstery fabric

  • Leather color or type

  • Wood finish

  • Lacquer finish

  • Metal finish

  • Stone top

  • Sofa size or sectional configuration

  • Dining table size

  • Bed size or headboard finish

Customization gives a project more control, but it can increase lead time and require more approvals.

What does COM/COL mean in furniture?

COM means Customer’s Own Material. COL means Customer’s Own Leather.

These terms are used when a client, designer, or purchasing team supplies fabric or leather instead of choosing from the furniture maker’s standard options.

COM/COL is useful when a project needs a specific upholstery material, performance fabric, color, texture, or leather type. It is common in designer-led and custom furniture projects.

However, COM/COL must be approved before production. The material must be suitable for upholstery, properly measured, labeled, shipped, and documented.

How do I specify COM or COL?

To specify COM or COL, first confirm the furniture frame, dimensions, quantity, and upholstery areas. Then ask the manufacturer for the required yardage or leather square footage.

Before ordering the material, confirm:

  • Fabric or leather supplier

  • Material name and color

  • Yardage or square footage

  • Pattern repeat

  • Direction or railroad instructions

  • Abrasion and performance details

  • Cleaning instructions

  • Flammability documentation if required

  • Manufacturer approval

  • Shipping address and labeling instructions

Do not send COM/COL casually. If the material arrives late, short, unlabeled, or unsuitable, production can be delayed.

What materials are used in luxury furniture?

Luxury furniture often uses wood, veneer, lacquer, stone, marble, travertine, leather, metal, glass, wool, linen, velvet, bouclé, and performance fabrics.

Each material has a different purpose. Wood and veneer bring warmth. Lacquer gives a polished architectural finish. Stone adds weight and permanence. Metal adds structure and detail. Leather adds richness and durability. Performance fabric improves usability in high-traffic spaces.

The best material is not always the most expensive one. The best material is the one that fits the room, the client’s lifestyle, the maintenance expectations, and the design concept.

How do I care for luxury furniture?

Luxury furniture care depends on the material. Most pieces should be protected from harsh chemicals, standing water, direct heat, abrasive cleaners, and unnecessary sun exposure.

General care rules:

  • Dust regularly with a soft cloth

  • Blot spills quickly

  • Use coasters on stone, wood, and lacquer surfaces

  • Avoid dragging objects across finishes

  • Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions

  • Keep upholstery away from sharp objects and dye-transfer materials

  • Use professional cleaning for delicate fabrics or serious stains

Care should be discussed before purchase, not after damage happens. A beautiful material that does not match the client’s lifestyle is the wrong material.

What are the best materials for outdoor luxury furniture?

The best luxury outdoor furniture materials include teak, powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel, natural stone, and outdoor performance fabric.

Teak works well for warmth and natural durability. Metal works well for modern frames and lower-maintenance structures. Stone adds architectural weight. Performance fabric makes outdoor sofas, cushions, and dining seats more comfortable and usable.

Outdoor furniture should be chosen based on climate, sun exposure, salt air, moisture, storage, and care expectations. A covered patio and a fully exposed pool deck do not need the same furniture plan.

Is Italian furniture better than American furniture?

Italian furniture and American furniture have different strengths.

Italian furniture is often known for refined proportions, sculptural forms, luxury finishes, and design-forward craftsmanship. American furniture often performs well for comfort, domestic availability, serviceability, and practical customization.

For luxury interiors, the strongest strategy is often a curated mix. Italian pieces can define the room. American or domestic pieces can support comfort, speed, or service needs. The right choice depends on the project.

Does Luzione work with designers?

Yes. Luzione can support designers with product sourcing, specifications, material coordination, procurement planning, lead-time tracking, and whole-home furniture installation.

Designer and trade projects often require more detail than standard retail purchases. Luzione can help with room-by-room product planning, finish selection, COM/COL coordination, delivery timelines, and installation logistics.

For trade support, designers should contact Luzione with project scope, room list, timeline, budget range, and any specific product or material requirements.

Does Luzione offer a trade program?

Luzione supports trade and designer-led projects. Trade support may include sourcing assistance, specification support, procurement coordination, whole-home planning, and delivery/install guidance.

If you are an interior designer, architect, builder, developer, or procurement lead, contact Luzione with your project details. The team can review the scope and explain available support for your project.

Recommended note before publishing: If Luzione has formal trade pricing, application requirements, minimum order values, or account terms, add them here before launch.

Can Luzione help with whole-home furniture planning?

Yes. Luzione can help plan furniture across multiple rooms, including living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, offices, outdoor spaces, and full-home installations.

Whole-home planning is especially useful when pieces need to coordinate across materials, finishes, lead times, and delivery schedules. Instead of buying one item at a time, Luzione can help build a more complete furniture plan around the home’s architecture and lifestyle.

When should I contact Luzione for a project?

Contact Luzione as early as possible, especially if the project includes custom furniture, imported furniture, outdoor furniture, COM/COL, or a whole-home install.

The earlier the conversation starts, the more options you have. Late procurement usually means fewer choices, higher rush costs, and more schedule risk.

For best results, contact Luzione before construction or remodeling is fully complete, not after the home is ready for move-in.
